Wan Shey Chop Chair EP (MUSIC REVIEW)
Wan Shey Chop Chair EP (MUSIC REVIEW):
On September 5, 2018, Cameroonian rapper, Wan Shey, released a project which he titled, THE TWIN EP. The “Twin” EP is a double release, that is, two different projects released as one – Chop Chair & Serene EPs. On this review, we will focus our attention on the first twin baby, The Chop Chair EP.
The Chop Chair EP is carries a Hip-Hop/Afro Trap vibe and is an in-depth narration of Wan Shey’s life. He talks about his place in the family, the challenges he has faced and some details of his love life. Generally, This project is Wan Shey’s first and official introduction to his fans since the launch of his musical career.
Now let us go song for song. We will rate each song under the following categories:-
-Engineering[Overall Mixing, Audio Quality] (…/10)
-Lyrics[Message, Storytelling, Punchlines, Rhyming, Wordplay] (…/10)
-Delivery[flow, Tact, Feeling] (…/10)
1. Intro: The Heir [Produced By Iron beatz]
Wan Shey literally poured out his heart on this one. He talks about how hardworking and sacrificing his biological mother used to be throughout his years in school. If you listen keenly to every line in this song, you can boast of Knowing Wan Shey to the core.
“Physically, I be weak, the school punching bag/
My food flask be be accessible to any hungry man/
E be di boil my veins, but I no be fit complain/
Any time I had them laid, na for my head they be revenge…” – Wan Shey.
2. Chopchair [Produced by Iron Beatz]
Here, Wan Shey makes an open declaration of his position in the family, the Chopchair. Using his lyrical intellect, Wan Shey links his Family Position to his self-acclaimed Lyrical Position. He claims the rap throne by calling himself “The king of Camer Rap”. Anyha!
“Make no man no kam try for di hate we/
Since we be royalty, ancestors elevate we/
As I be talk, King maker juh di burst/
Time for… Gimme the crown, na so I calee like boss/
Then E wear me that chain dem, put me that ring dem/
Talk I move my shoe, then we shake hands like real men/
As I shidon for chair, E whisper for my ear/
you’re King of Camer Rap, Na you be the Chop Chair…” – Wan Shey.
3. Kimbo [Produce By Iron Beatz]
To Be Honest, I had a hard time reviewing this song because the whole piece came in Wan Shey’s vernacular. Plus, Wan Shey’s delivery was smooth and fast. However, Iron Beatz deserves a huge round of applause for the wonderful instrumental. I am a big fan of 808 Basses and kicks played in a violent pattern – It gets me drunk.
4. Ndolo Ft. N.A.T [Produced by Iron Beatz]
Love is a powerful phenomenon. On this song, Wan Shey switches between Pidgin, English and French languages as he focuses on confusing his lady with love soothing words. I must confess N.A.T did a marvelous job on that chorus. I pray your girl does not listen to this song, you’re about to lose her.
“I remember when these people be hate us/
Now we day na TV, dem must face us/
Enter our tori, enter our success/
even for harmattan, me and you di fresh/
(Yep), people di hustle their own/
we day di flex, dem still di gum for our neck/
Tell you I’m here for the sex?/
You know me well, together we’re better than best…” – Wan Shey.
5. History FT. ARREY [Produced by Method J]
The first verse on this one explains the difficulties and fakery in showbiz. The second verse tells another story of a lady who is a superb artist, but never invested much energy into her music because her life was a mess. Most Interestingly, Wan Shey left a message for critics on the last four lines of each verse – my favorite lines on this one.
“So when wuna wan di talk trash for FACEBOOK/
Based on mere looks, Never on truth/
Wuna get to realize and analyse the sacrifice/
way these artists them di go through for make wuna satisfied…” – Wan Shey.
6. No Mind [Produced by iron beatz]
This is the second Love song on the project. The calm and melodious chorus carries a chill vibe, let’s call it a mid night lullaby. However, I need to be a little critical here.
Wan Shey is a rapper and he released a 7 song EP with and Intro and an Outro, leaving us with 5 serious songs. Among these songs, he uses 2 of them to talk about his love life? I think as a rapper, Wan Shey should have been a little concerned about other aspects or angles of society. Aside that, he’s awesome.
“ONE, Make fake people no surprise you/
TWO, Make bad belle no di bite you/
THREE, make OBANJES no di bind you or blind you/
Make you concentrate on top your grind you…” – Wan Shey
7. Outro: Thank You [Produced by Iron Beatz]
This song is basically a thanks giving to all who contributed to success of the entire project.
